Firefighters responded to a blaze at 312 Bruce Street in Wallaceburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say crews responded to a shed fire at 1:39 p.m.

“Fire crews arrived and found heavy smoke coming from a large shed next to the house,” stated Assistant Chief Philip Thorburn in a media release.

“They quickly advanced a hoseline into the shed and extinguished the fire before it had chance to extend to the house.”

Thorburn said prior to the fire, a propane-fired deep fryer was being used inside the structure to cook food.

“When operating such appliances it is important to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions,” Thorburn said.

“These type of appliances are to only be used outside, away from combustible materials and should be supervised at all times when in use.”

An estimated $30,000 was caused as a result.

The cause has been ruled accidental.

Firefighters from Station #3 – Wallaceburg and Station #2 – Chatham responded to the fire.
