Loafers not allowed!

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Sometimes we meet people who are enjoying the spoils of life but it seems like it came easily to them.

“She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth” we say, or “If he fell in the river he wouldn’t get wet” we sigh.

Of course, neither of these pithy sayings is actually true, but something the late Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, says was: “The man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there.”

I have a brother who spent his summers while in university working his tail off for minimal pay for his professors because the work gave him experience in the field he was studying.

Many of his friends, who had good-paying summer jobs mocked him for his stupidity, but it was Mike who had the last laugh.

At the time of graduation he had so many offers for jobs that his only problem was deciding which position to take.

The early church grew in leaps and bounds because God’s servants refused to loaf around.

In 1 Corinthians 4:11-13 the apostle Paul said, “To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.”

Let’s be careful when we see successful people and jump to the conclusion that they got lucky to be where they are.

If you aren’t satisfied with where you are at in your life maybe, just maybe you need to trade your loafers for a pair of steel-toed work boots and start making your way up the mountain.
