Foster’s Meats – Morning Coffee

Weather forecast for Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Today – A mix of sun and cloud. 30 percent chance of showers late this afternoon with risk of a thunderstorm. Fog patches dissipating this morning. Wind becoming southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 this afternoon. High 32. Humidex 42. UV index 8 or very high.

Tonight – Partly cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers early this evening with risk of a thunderstorm. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light this evening. Low 21.

Heat warning continues

A heat event will continue through Wednesday, forecasters say.

“A hot and very humid airmass remains in place over the area. Maximum daytime temperatures near 32 degrees are generally expected through Wednesday with humidex values near or above 41. Overnight minimum temperatures will likely remain near 21 degrees providing little relief from the heat,” Environment Canada officials say.

“Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible each day which could reduce maximum daytime highs. However, maximum daily humidex values are still expected to be near 41. A cold front is expected to move through Wednesday night bringing an end to the hot and humid weather.”

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

CKPS: Back-to-school

The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to wish all the kids going to school this morning a safe, fun and memorable school year.

Just a reminder to all motorists that there will be an increase in traffic and pedestrians, especially young children out on our streets today. Please reduce your speed in the area of crosswalks and school zones, remember slower is safer.

With school buses back on the road, all drivers must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights and stop arm flashing, regardless of the speed limit or number of lanes. Motorists failing to comply may be issued a $490 fine and six demerit points.

Back to school safety is a community effort.

Let’s make the 2018-2019 school year here in Chatham-Kent a safe one.

OPP: Watch for students and buses

The Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists that our students are returning to school.

There will be an increase in pedestrian, bicycle, and motor vehicle traffic; including school buses.

The Highway Traffic Act (HTA) section 175 states: “every driver or street car operator, when meeting on a highway, other than a highway with a median strip, a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing, shall stop before reaching the bus and not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead lights have stopped flashing.”

And: “every driver or street car operator on a highway, when approaching from the rear, a stopped school bus that has its overhead signal-lights flashing, shall stop at least twenty meters before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.” Caution must always be exercised by motorists, especially when around school buses which are parked, stopped, or otherwise.

Motorists must also slowdown in school safety zones, and be prepared to stop for crossing guards, crosswalks, and pedestrians. Caregivers are encouraged to speak to their children about road safety rules, school bus and pedestrian safety. It is no secret. The vast majority of our collisions occur due to inattentive driving.

SLOW DOWN. KEEP YOUR EYES OFF YOUR DEVICES AND BE MINDFUL OF OUR STUDENT PEDESTRIANS AND BUSES!
