United Way of Chatham-Kent sets 2018 target

At the 2018 Annual Campaign Kick-Off tonight, Campaign Chair Caterina Dawson announced a goal of $1,559,000.

The United Way’s Mission is “to improve lives and build community.”

United Way officials say donations to and through the annual United Way campaign are invested in programs that help people cope with the numerous challenges of daily life – those associated with poverty, addiction, mental illness and physical disabilities.

In 2017, over 45,000 residents turned to a United Way funded program in search of hope – hope that their life situation could and would get better for themselves and for their families.

Organizations that pledged their early support have already pledged over $300,000.

These included pledges from CLAC, Union Gas, Teksavvy and even individuals.

This gives the annual campaign a nice kick-start to begin with.

“This is a really outstanding night. When I was little I used to wish on a star every night. I always thought that making a wish, and really hoping for it, would change lives. Now that I am older, I know that people have to make things happen. The people in the this room are just beginning of the process. Together this community can accomplish so much,” Dawson said in a media release.

“Setting this year’s goal was difficult. There are a lot of worthwhile things happening in Chatham-Kent, many in the next month. But we did our homework and talking to our partners we came up with a goal that we feel represents what we can achieve this year. It is really important for us to meet this goal, and even go way past it, as so many programs, over 30 last year, are dependent on this for funding.”
