Event to welcome international students to C-K

Close to 300 international students from countries around the world have begun classes in Chatham-Kent this school year.

Municipal officials say this international study experience offers the students the opportunity to improve their English language skills and learn more about Canadian culture, all while living in the safe and friendly community of Chatham-Kent.

In turn, the presence of the students helps to expand the cultural horizons of Chatham-Kent students and prepare them for careers in a global and diverse society.

To welcome the students and to acknowledge the welcoming role played by host families, local school boards, post-secondary schools, and Rotary clubs, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Community Attraction and Promotion team are organizing a Welcome Event and Community Showcase.

“As Canada’s first welcoming community, it is befitting that we welcome new residents and visitors, and showcase all that Chatham-Kent is and has to offer, so that they return home as CK ambassadors”, said Audrey Ansell, Manager of Community Attraction and Promotion, in a media release.

The event will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Kingston Park, Paxton Drive, Chatham (alternative location in case of rain is at the Salvation Army, 46 Orangewood Boulevard, Chatham).

Mayor Hope will open the event with an official welcome at 11 a.m.

The event is open to all international students in Chatham-Kent and their host families, and will provide opportunities to meet other international students and residents in Chatham-Kent and to learn about services and activities in the region.

International students and host families can RSVP or send questions to livingck@chatham-kent.ca.
