Feature Act Recognizes volunteers who created the first Accessible Beach Playground in Chatham-Kent

The Erieau Partnership Association and the Accessible Playground Equipment Committee received the Feature Act Recognition on Monday, October 1, 2018 in Council Chambers.

Since 2008, volunteers have worked to ensure that Erieau is an accessible community that everyone can enjoy together. They have installed boardwalks and benches within Laverne Kelly Park, installed an accessible gazebo on the Boulevard and accessible viewing platforms so visitors and residents can enjoy views of Rondeau Bay and Lake Erie.

Most recently, the group worked with the Chatham-Kent Parks and Recreation Department to install an accessible playground that includes seven pieces of equipment from pods for autistic children to a cruise line for all.

Eloise Williscroft, the Chair of the committee stated, “Our vision is to be able to watch children playing on the accessible playground equipment rather than having them sit on the sidelines watching their siblings and playmates playing on beach equipment that is not accessible to them”.

Mayor Hope and Chris June, Co-Chair of the Chatham-Kent Community Leaders’ Cabinet, presented certificates of recognition and expressed their appreciation for investing time and energy to ensure that all children can play.

They commended volunteers and thanked them for creating fair and inclusive opportunities for all.

The Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Gail Hundt, and Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce Chair, Karen Debergh, cited that the action taken by this group is an example of how people care about others.

Creating inclusive spaces and investing in equipment so that all children can play is critical, as play is crucial for human development, the growth of social skills and self-confidence. Allowing all children to play creates opportunities and enhances everyone’s quality of life.

The Feature Act recognition ceremony was held at the Civic Centre during Municipal Council and was televised by YourTV Chatham. Feature Act is a recognition program of the CK Community Leaders’ Cabinet in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, the Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality to say thanks for building a better Chatham-Kent.
