It’s Fire Prevention Week – a week to ensure your home is protected from fire and carbon monoxide.

“We encourage everyone is CK to sign-up for a CHiRP Check – firefighters will visit your home, make sure your alarms are working, located in the correct spot and not expired,” stated Public Educator, Whitney Burk, in a press release.

“We will answer questions and discuss other fire safety precautions – including the importance of having a home escape plan. Early detection is key, as you may have less than three minutes to get out of your home safely during a fire.”

Burk added: “The biggest misconception we see is people believe they are protected because they press the button on their alarms and it beeps, however the sensors inside the alarms wear out over time. Alarms, even hardwired alarms, need to be replaced about every ten years or as recommended in the manufactures instructions.”

Firefighter from all 19 stations will be out in their communities going door-to-door completing CHiRP checks throughout the month of October.

Other Fire Prevention Week events taking place include:

– School visits across CK

– Friday Oct.12 – Coffee with a Firefighters at McDonald’s in Wallaceburg from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

– Saturday Oct. 13 – Open House at Station #18 in Blenheim 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
