Online & advance poll voting totals surpass 2014

A last-day surge helped push online and advance poll voting higher than in 2014 according to final figures provided by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

When online voting ended Monday night at 10 p.m. 9,787 votes were cast, an increase from 2014’s total of 7,330.

Traditional advance polls were also up, with 2,290 votes cast October 11-13 as compared with 2,059 in 2014.

More than 1,800 votes were cast online Monday, bringing the combined total for online and traditional advance votes to 12,077, over the 2014 combined total of 9,389.

In the two elections prior to online voting, advance poll totals were 3007 in 2010 and 3,948 in 2006.

Chief Returning Officer and Chatham-Kent Director of Municipal Governance Judy Smith said she was pleased with the increases.

“I believe increased publicity regarding online voting and more voter familiarity with the process were certainly factors in the increase,” Smith said in a media release.

“We’re very happy with the turnout so far.”

There is one more day remaining to vote, Monday, October 22, 2018.

On Election Day, October 22, the public will be able to follow election results, which will be posted at www.ckelection.com/results, going live at 8 p.m.

The results will auto-refresh and loop through each of the races by default.

There were 32,783 votes cast (42.1 per cent of eligible votes) during the 2014 election.

That percentage increased from 32,398 (39.9 per cent of eligible votes) during 2010.
