Members of Royal Canadian Legion branches across the community gathered last week to mark Veteran’s Week in Canada.

Veterans Week officially begins November 5 and runs through November 12; however, poppy sales are already beginning in more than 100 locations across the community.

Street sales of poppies will be held November 1 through 3 and all proceeds are used to fund programs that directly help veterans and their families.

Padre John Anderson read an excerpt from the poem “For the Fallen” prior to the poppy flag being raised as a ceremony held in Chatham.

A flag raising was also held in Wallaceburg.

Chatham-Kent Mayor-Elect Darrin Canniff noted that while the work of the legion goes on throughout the year, it is particularly important to highlight those efforts in the time leading up to Remembrance Day, November 11.
