CKPS: Halloween Reminder

(Chatham-Kent Police Service)

With Halloween fast approaching the Chatham-Kent Police Service are reminding citizens to look over all Halloween Candy prior to allowing children to consume.

Last year we had a Chatham residence inspected her children’s Halloween candy, and located a needle lodged into a snickers bar.

Please be cautious prior to allowing your children to consume their candy and carefully check over the pieces they received.

OPP: Halloween Safety Tips

Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers will be highly visible in all parts of the County to help make this a safe and fun ‘Trick or Treating” experience for everyone.

Halloween is a cherished tradition, but the excitement of the night can certainly cause children to forget how to be careful. Safety starts even before the children go out. The following are safety tips for children, parents and motorists.

Walk; do not run from door to door. Use sidewalks and cross walks or cross at corners and well-lit areas. It is not safe to cut across lawns as there may be objects on the grass that you could trip over.

Adults should accompany children at all times. Small children should ‘Trick or Treat’ when it is still daylight if possible.

Older children should stay in groups, plan a route and stick with it. Let your family know what route you intend to use and agree on a time to be home so they can go out to look for you if you do not return on time.

Only go to lit homes and never go into a house or apartment even if you are invited. Don’t talk to strangers or get into vehicles while out ‘Trick or Treating.’

Always check your treats before you eat them. Look for packaging that has been tampered with, or is loose or torn. If you are suspicious, throw them away. Homemade popcorn balls, cookies and candy apples are nice and usually well intended by the giver but they can be dangerous. Dispose of them as well unless you know and trust who gave them to you.

Drivers should slow down and watch for children. Children get excited and may forget to look before they run out onto the roadways.

Don’t drive distracted. Keep your eyes on the roadway and your mind on driving.

Don’t drink and drive! Use a designated driver, take a taxi or use public transit.

Please do your part to ensure this is a safe and fun Halloween for everyone.

Cogeco’s Trick or Treat Patrol

For the fifth consecutive year, Cogeco will once again be rolling out their Trick or Treat Patrol Program.

Committed to the communities they serve, they recognize one of the most precious assets in these communities is the children.

Therefore, Cogeco is happy to continue with this program to help keep children safe when they are out ‘Trick or Treating’ in their local neighbourhood on Halloween night.

“Cogeco sees the ‘Trick or Treat’ patrolling as a way to support the local communities,” stated Rick Lyman, Senior Director, Technical Operations.

“In partnering with police, our employees provide additional eyes to help protect our children while they enjoy their door to door visiting experience, making it a fun evening for these children as well as for their parents and/or caregivers.”

The Cogeco staff will be out in their branded white vans patrolling the streets on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm in areas where children are ‘Trick or Treating’.

Parents and children are encouraged to reach out to them if at any point they think they may need assistance.

Helpful tricks on how to eat your treats the smart way

It’s no secret that a lot of candy is going to be eaten in the coming days.

The Ontario Dental Association (ODA) is sharing pointers on how to enjoy your treats while causing as little damage as possible to your pearly whites.

Follow these tips and it could prevent a horror story from happening in your mouth:

Hits

Chocolate – Plain chocolate is sugary but it dissolves quickly so it’s less damaging to teeth.

Nuts – Healthy and tasty, nuts contain vitamins and minerals that help teeth stay strong.

Cheese – Nibbling on cheese is good for your teeth because it neutralizes cavity-causing acid and increases saliva, which is your mouth’s way of keeping clean.

Water – A swish of water after eating sweets is a great way to cleanse your mouth and wash away sugar.

Timing – The best time to eat your treats is after a meal because you’ll be too full to over-indulge on them. Plus, peak saliva flow will help flush out the sugary residue.

Misses

Hard candy, jaw breakers and lollipops – These candies take a long time to break down and they marinate your teeth in sugar. They’re also hard and have been known to chip teeth and dislodge braces.

Caramels, raisins and fruit strips – Their sticky consistency clings to teeth and that can lead to cavities.

Chips – These get stuck on and in between your teeth and cause cavities if they’re left to sit too long.

Brushing after you eat – Eating softens tooth enamel so wait 30 minutes before brushing and flossing.
