Chatham-Kent Mayor-Elect Darrin Canniff wants to take Chatham-Kent Council meetings on the road.

The current Chatham Councillor is bringing forward a notice of motion on Monday, November 19 requesting staff to look into the possibility.

“It is important for Council to have a presence throughout all communities within (the) Municipality of Chatham-Kent,” Canniff said in his notice of motion.

Canniff said he wants administration to outline the logistics of holding two Council meetings in each of the larger communities over a four year Council term.

“These communities include Ridgetown, Blenheim, Tilbury, Wheatley, Wallaceburg, Dresden, Thamesville and Bothwell,” Canniff said.

“This report should include potential locations within communities, eligibility to hold general public seating,
how electronic voting may occur, use of microphones, media coverage including Cogeco television, etc.”

Canniff said the Chatham-Kent procedural by-law states all regular meetings of Council shall be held in the Council Chambers of the Civic Centre in Chatham “or at such other place within the Municipality as Council may from time to time determine.

“A proposed calendar is presented by the Clerk’s Office to Council for approval by December of each year, detailing the dates for all regular Council meetings in the subsequent year,” he said.

Canniff said he wants this report to be submitted to the new Council after December 2018.

Monday’s combined planning and regular meeting, the final one for this term of Council, begins at 6 p.m.
