Council meetings outside of Chatham being explored

(Municipality of Chatham-Kent)

Chatham-Kent Council gave the go ahead for staff to look into holding Council meetings in different locations across the Municipality.

A notice of motion by Mayor-Elect and Chatham Counc. Darrin Canniff was approved by Council on Monday night.

Canniff said he wants administration to outline the logistics of holding two Council meetings in each of the larger communities over a four year Council term.

These communities include Wallaceburg, Dresden, Ridgetown, Blenheim, Tilbury, Wheatley, Thamesville and Bothwell.

“It is important for Council to have a presence throughout all communities within (the) Municipality of Chatham-Kent,” Canniff said in his notice of motion.

Canniff said he wants the report to include potential locations within communities, eligibility to hold general public seating, how electronic voting may occur, use of microphones, media coverage including Cogeco television, etc.

The report would also include a full costing for the idea, including the cost of staff time to prepare the report.

Canniff said the Chatham-Kent procedural by-law states all regular meetings of Council shall be held in the Council Chambers of the Civic Centre in Chatham “or at such other place within the Municipality as Council may from time to time determine.

“A proposed calendar is presented by the Clerk’s Office to Council for approval by December of each year, detailing the dates for all regular Council meetings in the subsequent year,” he said.

The report is set to be submitted to the new Council after December 2018.
