Chatham-Kent Council: December 10 meeting recap (Video)

The new Chatham-Kent Council met in regular session for the first time on Monday night, December 10, 2018.

Here is a recap from the meeting:

– Chatham Coun. Doug Sulman presented Mayor Darrin Canniff with a new gavel and a brief lesson on its history and use.

– Ian Clark, business systems and planning analyst for community attraction and leisure services provided an update on this week’s Hometown Hockey Event in Chatham-Kent. More details, here.

– Deputations were heard by Council from two individuals regarding Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor’s motion about the United Way of Chatham-Kent.

– West Kent Coun. Melissa Harrigan entered a notice of motion to investigate bringing summer day camps to Bothwell and Tilbury through the Super Kids CK program.

– South Kent Coun. Trevor Thompson brought forward a notice of motion for administration to work with the Erie St. Clair LHIN to help fund and reinstate a primary care practitioner recruitment and retention program for Chatham-Kent. Thompson said an upside limit of $100,000 would be submitted to the 2019 budget in support of this program.

– Chatham Coun. Karen Kirkwood-Whyte entered a notice of motion with the idea of creating an 11-person Chatham-Kent transit task force.

– An information report about LIVE streaming meetings was approved by Council. This issue is also set to be discussed further during the upcoming budget deliberations.

– An information report about the Healthy Kids Community Challenge: Super Kids CK was approved.

– The ‘2019 Schedule of Council Meetings’ and the ‘Acting Mayor Schedule 2018 – 2022’ was approved.

– A presentation by Michael Hensen, IRC Building Services Group, was given. Council also approved the results of the 2016/17 building condition assessments, accessibility audits, energy upgrade updates and capital reserve fund forecast.

– The 2018 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards nominations was approved.

– A motion by Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor, about the United Way of 2018 Chatham-Kent Campaign, was unanimously approved. Watch for a full story on this topic on the Sydenham Current.

– The ‘Municipal Insurance Renewal 2019’ was approved.

– And the ‘Sole Source – Esri Small Local Government Enterprise Agreement’ was approved.

– In closed session, Council discussed the following items: Committee of Council Appointments, Bothwell Environmental Matters, complaints filed with the Integrity Commissioner, the minimal maintenance standards for highways and sidewalks, an economic development opportunity for Dajcor Aluminum Inc. and the proposed disposition of land for various properties across C-K.
