Update: New Scotland Line culvert repair

(Municipality of Chatham-Kent)

The completion of the New Scotland Line culvert repair is under way and is to be completed by December 18, municipal officials said in a press release.

Work on culvert replacement between Kent Bridge Road and Mull Road was scheduled to begin in mid-November but was pushed back due to wet weather.

A 3.68 kilometre section of the road has been closed since May 5 when the culvert beneath the road failed.

An engineering report was completed and the $422,000 contract was awarded to South Shore Contracting of Essex in September.

The contact was 16 per cent below the engineer’s estimate.

The current phase involves removal of the failed culvert followed immediately by installation of the new pre-cast culvert.

Once that takes place, the road will have a temporary gravel surface at the culvert until next spring when weather will permit laying an asphalt surface.
