The reason for the season

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Here we are only a few days before Christmas.

These past few weeks may have been filled with parties, shopping, eating, and visiting with family and friends, with more of the same planned on the near horizon.

You may even be feeling a bit worn out from the frenetic pace you’ve been keeping.

If you have experienced a loss in the past year you may actually be dreading the next few days.

In a few days it will be that one day in the entire year that has the least amount of daylight.

The winter solstice marks what could be described as ‘the longest night.’

That fact is metaphorical for the pain of grief that many suffer through during the Christmas season.

However, if we can pause and consider the person of Jesus Christ, the reason for the season, then light can shine into our darkness, just as it did that first Christmas night in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago.

Luke 2:11 says, “For unto us is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”

Everyone needs to hear good news.

That can come in the form of a test result coming back negative, or a phone call from a long lost relative or friend.

It also comes in the promises of Scripture.

I realize these few days before Christmas are likely busy ones for most of us.

However, I would recommend calling a time out.

Get yourself a hot tea or cocoa, a couple of Christmas cookies and a comfy chair.

Then grab a Bible and turn to the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke.

Relax under the glow of the Christmas tree lights and soak in the promise of Christmas found in the first 20 verses of this chapter.
