Fire training on Walpole Island (Photos)

The Walpole Island Fire Department recently had the opportunity to do some unique training inside a burning house.

Walpole Island Fire Chief Charles Wright told the Sydenham Current that a local resident requested help demolishing an old home, in order to make way for new construction to take place on the property.

Last month, members of the department set fire to the vacant house and participated in hands on training to learn the stages of a house fire.

Wright said the focus was put on search and rescue training, smoke filled rooms, flash overs and ways of escaping or coming out of a burning house safely.

It is good training for the firefighters, as it teaches them fire safety, Wright said.

“We had some new guys there. We wanted to introduce them to the world of fire fighting.”

Wright added this kind of training is important for the more experienced firefighters as well.

“Our fires are further and far between,” Wright said.

“Some of them have never been inside of an actual burning building.”
