Matthew Weickert is the new curator at the Wallaceburg and District Museum.

Weickert, who is originally from Milton, attended Carleton University and spent time working with historical societies during his summer breaks.

He then went on to complete a museum graduate program at Fleming College in Peterborough.

From there, Weickert took an internship in Ottawa and volunteered with local museums.

“I was able to work in multiple community museums and get different levels of skills,” Weickert told the Sydenham Current.

Weickert’s interest in Wallaceburg started when he was looking at different museums across the province.

Weickert said while visiting the Wallaceburg and District Museum he noticed the position of curator was available and decided to apply.

“I was very impressed with the amount of exhibits,” he said.

Although there are no major projects in the works right now, Weickert said his first order of business is the hiring of 2019 summer students.

Weickert said they are in the process of applying for the grants and the positions should be available soon.

For now, Weickert said he is working on completing small projects that have already been started, such as the organizations room, which he hopes will be completed sometime in February.
