Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff this morning declared a state of emergency due to the failure of a Thames River dike that breached in multiple locations in the vicinity of Poppe Road and Buchanan Line in Tilbury.

Chatham-Kent General Manager, Infrastructure and Engineering Services Thomas Kelly said this morning municipal staff are in the process of dike repair.

Chatham-Kent Police Services have gone door to door to six homes in the area-notifying residents.

The public is requested to avoid the area to allow emergency dike repair to continue without interruption.

According to the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, the ice jam which formed at the Prairie Siding Bridge and caused flooding of low-lying areas in Chatham yesterday has broken up and moved to the mouth of the river at Lighthouse Cove where flooding is possible.

A media conference was set to be held at Poppe Road and Buchanan Line this morning at 11 a.m.
