Strengths vs. Weaknesses

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Coaching legend, John Wooden, changed the face of college basketball back in the 1960’s and 1970’s when he was the men’s basketball coach at UCLA, leading them to 10 consecutive NCAA championships and an 88-game winning streak.

The biggest victory for this devout Christian was what he instilled in his players.

He once said, “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

In my second summer of ministry I was working under an interim pastor who met with me during our first week together to see what things I was good at and what things needed work.

I told him I could do most things but definitely could not carry a tune, so anything musical was out.

For the next three weeks all he had me do was lead the singing at the services.

I mustered up courage to tell him I thought he misunderstood, but he assured me that I needed to work on my weaknesses.

Folks, that thinking is old school.

To this day, after 33 years in ministry I am still a lousy song leader!

I decided long ago that you can’t fight city hall, so I have left song leading to those who can do it and moved on to those areas where I feel the Lord can use me.

The words of the wise King Solomon have value for us in this area, as recorded in Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.”

So forget about trying to be good at everything and focus on what you do well.

Then, get out there and make a difference in your corner of the world.
