Update: Fine handed out after July dog attack

Animal Control Services officials in Chatham-Kent say a fine has been handed out after an alleged dog attack on July 20, 2018.

Jason Hamm, manager of Animal Control Services, said in an email to the media that a 54-year-old man was walking with a cane down Gray Street in Chatham last summer.

“While walking by a house on Gray Street a male American Bulldog was able to pull a motorized wheelchair onto the sidewalk,” Hamm said.

“In result the dog bit the 54 year old male’s right wrist. The victim in this matter suffered a fractured bone in his forearm and underwent surgery. Currently, the male is still undergoing treatment as a result to the dog bite.”

Hamm said on Wednesday in Provincial Offences Court, a 59-year-old Chatham women was convicted of one count of ‘being the owner of a dog, that did not exercise reasonable precautions to prevent the dog from attacking a person.’

Hamm said this was contrary to Section 5.1 (a) of the Dog Owners’ Liability Act.

She was fined 1,500 dollars, Hamm added.
