Inquest date set

Dr. Rick Mann, Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, London Office, announced on Monday that the dates have been set for a joint inquest into the deaths of Wallaceburg’s John Janssens and two other men.

Janssens, 73, died on January 15, 2016; Michael Maukonen, 19, died on June 28, 2016; and William Swan, 56, died on May 16, 2017, from injuries sustained from a fall while working at various roof construction projects.

An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act, provincial officials stated.

“The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths,” provincial officials said in a media release.

“The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.”

The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from approximately 14 witnesses, provincial officials say.

“The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2019, at the Ontario Court of Justice, 425 Grand Ave. W., Chatham,” provincial officials say.

“Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke will preside as inquest coroner and Gideon Bloch will be counsel to the coroner.”
