Vandalism on Fifth St. Bridge causing delays

(Municipality of Chatham-Kent)

Vandalism to construction equipment and materials were identified on Monday morning April 8 both above and below the Fifth Street Bridge.

Municipal officials say electrical wires feeding street lights along the bridge deck were cut and damaged, along with lighting and duct work under the bridge along Simcoe Lane.

In addition, the Contractor’s work trailer was broken into with valuable materials found missing.

The incident was immediately reported to Chatham-Kent Police Services.

The General Contractor for the Fifth Street Bridge stated: “Our team is working to complete this project as quickly as possible. Such acts are very frustrating to us as it causes delays to the overall project.”

With construction season now upon us and with the final stages of the Fifth Street Bridge now commencing, the Municipality would like to remind all public to please obey the traffic and pedestrian control measures that are in place, municipal officials say.

“If anyone has any information about this recent act of vandalism, please contact Chatham-Kent Police,” Chatham-Kent officials said in a media release.
