Water safety bulletin issued for Sydenham River

(SCRCA)

A water safety bulletin has been issued by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA), as 30 to 35 mm of precipitation is in the forecast over the next 72 hours.

SCRCA officials say water levels expected to rise, fast flowing water and slippery stream banks is expected and there is a potential for road closures.

“A Colorado Low system will be tracking through the region this afternoon resulting in approximately 5 mm of rain and a risk of thunderstorms,” SCRCA officials said in a press release.

“Increased precipitation in localized areas is possible, as are the potential for strong wind gusts. A low pressure system originating in Texas is expected to bring large amounts of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico resulting in approximately 30 mm of precipitation starting Sunday morning. A second low system is anticipated to follow and could bring further precipitation into next week.”

SCRCA officials say water levels are expected to rise with the potential for localized flooding in floodplain areas, parks and farm fields throughout the region.

“Water levels are anticipated to remain high throughout next week as the water makes its way through the rivers,” SCRCA officials stated.

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise, SCRCA officials say.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Monday, April 15, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
