North Kent Mutual Insurance opens new location

North Kent Mutual Insurance Staff, Chatham-Kent Economic Development staff, Mayor Darrin Canniff, Councillor Karen Kirkwood-Whyte, and friends joined in celebrating the opening of the new Chatham location.

Residents of Chatham and surrounding region now have more options when it comes to choosing insurance for all of their personal, business, and farm needs. North Kent Mutual Insurance has opened a new location at 226 St. Clair Street in Chatham with three staff ready to help the community. This is their third Chatham-Kent location, with the head office located in Dresden, another in Tilbury, and a fourth office located in Sarnia.

“This is an exciting venture for us and speaks to the demand from customers along with the growth that we have seen recently in Chatham-Kent,” said Henry Miller, President and CEO of North Kent Mutual Insurance. “Last year we passed the $10 million in sales, which is a record for us in our 109 year history.”

Dean Maharrem, Sales Manager for North Kent Mutual Insurance attributes three elements to their success. “The first part is that we are local and understand the needs of people in our own backyard, the second is that we are dedicated to the philosophy of ‘common sense underwriting’, and the third is that when you pick up the phone and call us, you’re not a number, you’re a person speaking directly with a person who can help.”

When asked about the common sense underwriting approach, Dean explained that it meant that they listen to their customers, look at what they actually need, and provide coverage based on their specific situation.

“A lot of insurance coverage today is written based on big generalized data sets about an entire region. We take the time to actually speak with our customers, which is a different approach than many other companies,” said Dean. “For example, we recently had someone come to us with a 100+ year old home that was deemed ‘too old to insure’ and we were able to visit the beautiful house in person and recognize that it was a perfectly reasonable property to insure.”

North Kent Mutual Insurance is one of Ontario’s 40+ independent Mutual Insurance companies.

“One of the things I love about being a part of an independent Mutual Insurance company is that we have a strong focus on helping the local community,” said Nancy Labadie, Agent with North Kent Mutual Insurance. “We are encouraged to volunteer, to find ways to give back to the community, and to be active as a company with agencies such as the United Way of Chatham Kent.”
