Train derailment in the CN tunnel in Sarnia

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services (SFRS) was notified of and responded to a train derailment in the CN tunnel on Friday, June 28.

SFRS launched an investigation and were woirking with officials from CN and Sarnia Police Services.

Officials, including the Port Huron Fire Department, also responded from the United States side of the tunnel.

“There is no known public hazard or off site impact as a result of this incident and no injuries reported,” SFRS officials said.

The Sarnia Primary Control Group met at 1:31 p.m. on June 28, 2019 at The Sarnia Police Station regarding the derailment.

“One tank car containing sulphuric acid was breached in the tunnel,” officials with the Sarnia Police Service stated.

“We have been advised that contamination in the tunnel is contained. Further environmental monitoring will continue.”

SFRS will provide further updates as necessary.
