Conditions are favourable for funnel clouds

Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory, as conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today, July 17.

Forecasters say a few showers have developed over the area.

“There has been a report of a funnel cloud near Leamington early this afternoon,” Environment Canada officials stated.

“A few more funnel clouds may be spotted across the region this afternoon along with isolated showers and a possible brief thunderstorm.”

Forecasters added: “These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously, forecasters say.

“Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter,” Environment Canada officials say.

“These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”
