SCRCA issued flood outlook for Sydenham River

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has issued a flood outlook for the region, as five to 10 mm of rain is anticipated for today and tomorrow.

SCRCA officials say southwesterly winds are expected through to Saturday evening, adding that there are currently elevated water levels across the watershed and sustained high water levels in Wallaceburg.

“High water levels on Lake Huron, St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair have slowed the movement of water out of the Sydenham River, and
as a result have created conditions where water levels in Wallaceburg remain high,” SCRCA officials said in a media release.

“A convective system is anticipated to bring 5 to 10 mm of rain this afternoon and evening with a further anticipated 5 to 10 mm tomorrow.
This amount of rain may exacerbate already high water levels and result in minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, agricultural fields
and parks.”

Winds from a southerly or westerly direction can further slow the movement of water out of the Sydenham River and contribute to flooding in the Wallaceburg region, SCRCA officials say.

“Soils already saturated by prolonged high water levels could see possible increased erosion and seepage issues,” Conservation officials say.

“High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas. River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

The SCRCA continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

“Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”

This flood outlook will remain in effect until Monday, July 22, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
