Not for profit

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Does everything you do have to be for some sort of profit or gain?

What I mean is, what if you were presented with an opportunity to do something for which there would be no reward or recognition?

Author Ruth Smeltzer once said, “You have not lived a perfect day unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

Years ago while living in another community I was challenged by a friend to do a random act of kindness for someone without their knowledge of it.

We had a snowstorm one night that winter and I set my alarm for 5:30 a.m.

Across the street was a home where two elderly sisters lived.

I shovelled their driveway under the cover of darkness and finished before the sun came up.

It was not hard work and it did not take me very long, but I know these ladies could not have done it on their own.

What is something that you can do for someone this week that will be a blessing to them but won’t net you a plaque on the wall or a pat on the back?

It doesn’t have to be some monumental thing, just something thoughtful and helpful.

For years my wife received a HUGE poinsettia plant a few days before Christmas from an anonymous donour who felt that the pastor’s wife deserved something in a season where her husband garnered much of the attention.

That was such a blessing for her to receive that plant each year.

C’mon, surely you can think of someone who can use a little “pick me up” this week, can’t you?

An opportunity may be on the near horizon and God is watching!
