Flood watch extended to Saturday

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has extended a flood watch for the region, as 40 to 55 mm of rain is in the forecast through Thursday.

Officials say fast flowing water and slippery stream banks are expected, road closures have been implemented and there is the potential for flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.

“High amounts of precipitation are forecast over the coming days,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Water levels elevated from recent rainfall are expected to rise further, with the potential for localized flooding in floodplain areas, parks and farm fields. Winds from a southwesterly direction are anticipated to cause a backwater effect, slowing the flow of water and contributing to elevated water levels.”

SCRCA officials say soils are expected to be saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.

“High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas,” officials say.

The following roads will be closed due to high water levels:

– Stanley Line east of Kimball Road

– Pretty Road north of McCallum Line

– Waterworks Road between Moore Line and Courtright Line

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This flood watch will remain in effect until Saturday, November 2, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
