McKeough Dam gates beginning to open, flood warning continues

The opening of the McKeough Dam gates has begun, while a flood warning continues across the region.

St. Clair Region Conservation Authority officials say water levels remain high, but are slowly receding.

“The process for opening the gates of the McKeough Dam has begun as of 12:30 p.m.” SCRCA officials said in a notice sent on Wednesday, January 15.

“With the amount of water currently in the watershed, some locations are still experiencing elevated water levels into floodplain areas, parks and farm fields.”

The following roads remain impacted due to flooding:

– Tefler Road between Courtright Line and Moore Line

– Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road

– Indian Creek Road between Bentpath Line and Wilkesport Line

– Duthill Road between Holt Line and Smith Line

– Waubuno Road between Bickford Line and Tennyson Line

– Waterworks Road north of Courtright Line

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely, SCRCA officials say.

This message will remain in effect until Friday, January 17, 2020, unless otherwise updated.
