When Wallaceburg writer and editor John Gardiner was planning to publish his first major literary collection earlier this year, there was one crucial ingredient that he thought absolutely needed to be part of the project – his daughter Rebecca’s art work.
The only problem was that Rebecca is a very busy young woman with three small children, a full-time job and a house to run. Still, her father insists he wouldn’t have published the book without her. “I had to keep after her to make sure she stayed on track,” said John Gardiner.“But the result is completely mind blowing.”
So, when Memories for Sale was published in mid-May, the book contained 14 pieces
of Rebecca’s artwork, including a striking cover illustration called, “Gawd” after the short novella in the collection.
Now, the Wallaceburg Branch of Chatham-Kent Public Library will be displaying some of the original artwork from Memories for Sale. A number of the pieces, including the cover, will be exhibited at the Wallaceburg Branch beginning on Thursday, September 14.
An opening reception will be held at 6:30 pm on that date and both author John Gardiner and visual artist Rebecca Gardiner will be there to talk about the work. John will also read a few brief selections from Memories for Sale and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase.
This event is open to everyone and is free to attend. For more information about this program or others at CKPL, please call 519.627.5292 or visit www.ckpl.ca.
