A meeting has been set to discuss bringing back the Canada Day festivities in Wallaceburg next year.

Wallaceburg resident Leesa Ervin, who works at the Wallaceburg & District Museum, told the Sydenham Current she has taken on the task of leading the coordination of the event in 2020.

An open meeting is taking place at the Wallaceburg Rotary Club, 507 Elizabeth Street, on Monday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Ervin said all are welcome to attend.

With the help of the former Wallaceburg Lions Club, Ervin helped organize the Canada Day festivities in Wallaceburg in 2018.

This past year’s event was cancelled about 10 days before the Canada Day festivities were scheduled to take place.

A number of circumstances, beyond the control of the organizers, led to the event being called off.

“This decision was made with great difficulty, but given the situation, we felt it was the right move,” Chris Glassford, the 2019 organizer, said in a media release.

“We believe Canada Day festivities are important to the community and are an event that many families and children look forward to every year. It is our hope that a Canada Day event can be held next year in Wallaceburg and for years to come.”

Funds raised for the Wallaceburg event will be donated to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to be held in trust for the future use of Canada Day events in Wallaceburg, the 2019 organizers said in a media release.
