A downtown Wallaceburg restaurant is up for an award.

James Street Eatery, along with owner James Bolos, has been nominated for a Mayor’s Heritage Preservation Award.

The awards are for properties in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent who demonstrated ‘best practice’ preservation, restoration, or renovation work that reflects a commitment to the quality and characteristics of a heritage property.

“James has done a great job restoring the façade and first storey interior of the James Street Eatery,” read the summary of restoration project on the municipal website. “The first storey of this two storey brick building has been used as a restaurant since its construction in 1911. James’ restorations began in 2008 with the removal of the drop ceiling; and the addition of new ducts, fans, lighting and fresh coat of paint, complimenting the original near century old tin ceiling in the restaurant.

The summary adds: “James continued his restorations in 2013 and 2014 with the repointing and repair of all three brick facades, and the addition of a new awning, windows and doors, sympathetically modernizing the main façade of the building.”

Properties in Camden, Erieau, Thamesville and Chatham were also nominated.

The Mayor’s Heritage Preservation Awards is a joint project of the Chatham-Kent Museum and Heritage Chatham-Kent.

The awards have been instituted to recognize property owners who have demonstrated best practices in historic preservation.

In addition to the five awards presented annually by Chatham-Kent Council, a sixth “People’s Choice” Award winner will be chosen by the citizens of Chatham-Kent.

The nominated properties will be displayed on online from October 15 to November 15.

On-line votes for the “People’s Choice” Award must be submitted during this time period.
