Hwy. 40 closed: Multiple crashes, zero visibility

Snow covered road closed signThe Chatham-Kent OPP are dealing with multiple collisions on Highway 40, as the winter storm has reduced visibility to zero between Pioneer Line and Wallaceburg.

Constable Janine Belanger says there are no reported injuries from the “multiple collisions” along the highway.

“I can’t give you an exact number,” Belanger said. “There have been multiple collisions. Officers and emergency crews are tending to those as we speak. We are getting the motorists to safety and in most cases, as long as the vehicles are not impeding traffic, the vehicles are being left behind. They will be towed when it is safe to do so.”

The road has been closed down due to “deteriorating road and weather conditions” as well as the multiple crashes.

Belanger said it is “undetermined” how long the Highway will remain closed.

“It all depends on the weather,” she said.

Belanger said the conditions are terrible.

“Right now visibility is zero,” she said. “The roads are snow covered, it is snowing heavily and the roads are slippery.”

Belanger said she is encouraging everyone to stay off local roads if possible.

“The OPP is advising motorists to avoid travelling,” she said.

We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.
