Many kids, students, and adults are busy and need healthy snacks and foods in a hurry. Many kids rush home from school to extracurricular activities and arrive home after the supper hour. The Eberts 4-H Lifeskills club recently discussed ways of preparing healthy snacks, learning about correct portion sizes, and the Canadian Food Guide. The club is a great opportunity for kids aged 9-21 to learn culinary skills, nutrition, and teamwork.

The members of the club kept a food diary for a week and learned the importance of balanced nutrition and not missing meals. Not only are you missing out on the important nutrients your growing body needs, but you are increasing the chance of obesity. Missing meals especially breakfast affects your metabolic rate. Many nutritious foods can be prepared and frozen until needed or prepared the night before if you know you will have a busy day.

Club leaders assist the participants to prepare recipes. In keeping with the 4H motto “learn by doing” the participants had an opportunity measure and mix ingredients to make apple spice muffins and egg and ham on an English muffin. Other great quick breakfast suggestions were fruit smoothies and hot oatmeal.

There are many different 4-H Clubs available in Chatham-Kent. If you are aged 9-21 and interested in joining 4-H find us on Facebook at Chatham-Kent 4H Association.
