Walpole Island holding election June 14

Bkejwanong - Walpole Island

Walpole Island is heading to the polls.

A general election will be held on June 14th on the First Nation reserve.

A nomination meeting was held on Thursday, May 1.

Not included on the nomination list for Chief is current Chief Burton Kewayosh.

This means Walpole Island will have a new leader at the helm following the election.

Kewayosh could not immediately be reached for comment.

The residents who have been nominated for the position of Chief, include:

– Mike Dashner

– Anthony Day (Sr.)

– Rex Isaac

– Kennon Johnson

– Dan Miskokomon

– Charlene Nahdee,

– Maxine Nahdee,

– Norman Nahdee (Sr.)

– Virgil McKenzie Nahdee (Sr.)

– Anna Riley

– Charles Sampson

– Howard Shipman (Sr.)

– John Stewart

– Steven Tooshkenig,

– Valerie Wababoose

A total of 71 residents have been nominated for a council position.

The residents had until 4 p.m. today (May 6) to decide if they were going to accept the nomination, and run in the election.

The voters will select one Chief and 12 council members. The terms for Chief and council last for two years.
