The list of candidates has been finalized for the upcoming general election taking place on Walpole Island.

A total of eight candidates will be on the ballots on June 14 for Walpole Island members to elect a new chief.

Accepting their nominations and running for chief are: Michael Dashner, Stewart John, Kennon Johnson, Dan Miskokomon, Charlene Nahdee, Virgil Nahdee Sr., Charles Sampson and Valarie Waboose.

Current chief Burton Kewayosh is not running again this year.

43 people will be on the ballot for the 12 band council positions.

James Jenkins, political advisor to chief and council, said there are a couple of ways for members to cast their votes.

“They can either come to the polls or they can mail in a ballot,” he said. “Any member of Walpole Island First Nation, that are either on or off reserve, can vote for a chief and up to 12 councillors. They have the option to either mail in their ballot or to come vote in person on election day.”

Voting will take place at the governance building and the polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Jenkins said a campaign night will be held on June 4 and will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Walpole Island Sports Complex.
