A group of former Wallaceburg District Secondary School students are heading back to the links in a few weeks to have some fun, raise some funds and pay tribute to #11.

The Tartan Alumni Fund (TAF), a registered charity founded in 2007, has booked Baldoon Golf Course for June 21st in order to hold the 2nd annual Pete Cram Memorial Golf Tournament and their fourth fundraising golf tournament overall.

The money raised goes towards the groups scholarship, given out annually at the WDSS commencement.

The group of 15 plus members are still missing one of their founding members, but his legacy still lives on.

Pete Cram, the former co-chair of the TAF, died on September 21, 2012, after injuries sustained in a tragic bicycling accident in Toronto.

He was 29.

“Last year was an emotional event, as many of Pete’s friends and much of his family were in attendance for the tournament,” said Erik Mitchell, chair of the TAF golf committee. “The sold-out tournament and the amount of love shown for Pete, was a true testament to the man he was. We all miss him very much, but look forward to packing the golf course in his honour once again.”

Mitchell said Cram was an integral part of the creation of the TAF charity and was a leader amongst their group of friends. Cram was also the quarterback for their Tartan Football team, wearing #11 as they won the Kent Championship in 1999.

Cram’s legacy has lived on in many other ways as well.

Upon his passing, many of his organs were successfully donated to people in need. His former school Western Technical in Toronto has dedicated a wing, near the football room where he coached, in honour of him.

“Pete was always a big supporter of students when he was a student, and later as a teacher and as a community leader,” said Ryan Jacques, chair of the Tartan Alumni Fund.

The 2nd Pete Cram Memorial Golf Tournament will be a shotgun start, scramble style tournament at Baldoon Golf Course on Saturday, June 21st.

Cost is $80 per person, and teams are filling up quick.

Cost includes a full meal at Baldoon after 18-holes of golf, with a cart.

Skins will also be up for grabs, as well as a prize for each golfer.

Members of the TAF are also actively seeking teams and sponsorship for the tournament.
