Chatham-Kent administration is recommending a new site for the OSPCA.
And it is not the same location, which was offered as a donation to the Municiplaity a few months ago.
Staff is recommending that 50 Siemens Drive in Chatham be approved as the location for the new municipally
owned animal shelter.
South Kent Coun. Frank Vercouteren contacted staff in November last year about a potential donation of land from Romoe Restorick for a new animal shelter, located in the former Harwich Township, Â located near the corner of Park Avenue and Highway 40.
Administration also looked at the possibility of revamping the existing facility at 405 Park Avenue East.
“At this time administration is recommending 50 Siemens Drive as the most suitable of the three properties for construction of the new municipally owned shelter,” said Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services. “It is administrations hopes that the proposed facility would be structured as an integrated, central hub for animal care, education and control in Chatham-Kent.”
The staff report indicates some issues arose with the five-acre Restorick property, including: installation of a septic or tertiary treatment facility, new fencing, no gas access and the need for an extension of water lines.
The 2-acre property at 50 Siemens Drive is already owned by the municipality.
Council is set to vote on the recommendations at the Monday, June 23 regular meeting.
