From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

With our nation’s 147th birthday coming right up I was thinking about the wonderful freedom we enjoy in this great country of Canada.

Last month I was privileged to be a part of a special ceremony in our town’s cemetery.

Lt. Edward Beresford was a local man who served two tours of duty as a peacekeeper in the Middle East back in the 1970’s.

He died in 2011, but due to financial shortfall his grave was left unmarked.

The Wallaceburg Veterans and Families’ support group worked with the family to raise the funds necessary to purchase the grave marker, hence the ceremony.

I thought of Edward’s service for our country, and that of all Canadian veterans, both past and present.

I led in a prayer that day thanking God for the freedom we enjoy, in part due to the sacrifices and services of our men and women of uniform.

Wouldn’t you agree that Canada Day is a fitting time to pause, bow our heads, and offer a small prayer of gratitude to the Lord for the freedom we enjoy?

While we are at it, why don’t we pray for the Lord’s protection over all our soldiers and their families who are currently on active duty? A thankful heart is a great way to enjoy our Canada Day!
