The shores of the Sydenham River at the Wallaceburg Legion Br. 18 were packed this morning for the annual kid’s fishing derby.
Mike Hindmarsh, president of Br. 18, said about 140 kids under the age of 13 took part.
Hindmarsh said the kids always walk away with something, including a hot-dog, pop and a prize.
“The whole idea is to do something for the kids and the town,” he said. “A $25 prize and a trophy is awarded to the kid who catches the biggest fish of the day and we also give $25 and a trophy for the most fish.”
The Ladies Auxiliary, A1 Cement, Dan and Lois Young from the Legion donate a total of four bicycles for the event as well.
“With the weather the way it was today, we weren’t even sure we would get started,” Hindmarsh said. “It`s gratifying to see. With Wallaceburg being hurt as bad as is has with the loss of jobs, there are less and less young people around. It`s important for us. Our mandate is to support the Veterans, support our senior programs and support our junior programs. This is one way to support the kids. Just seeing all the happy faces out here, what more could you ask for.”
