After-hours ‘homeless’ response line being launched

Chatham Civic Centre

On August 1, 2014, the CK Homeless Response Line will be launched as a joint community service initiative of the Chatham-Kent Housing & Homelessness Committee. The Homeless Response Line will fill a service gap identified as a priority recommendation in the 2013 Chatham-Kent Homelessness Plan for “after-hours” access to immediate emergency shelter. This service will be supported using existing resources and community partnerships.

Historically, people experiencing emergency homeless situations in Chatham-Kent were provided services through Employment & Social Services, The Salvation Army, The Women’s Centre and other local non-profit and church organizations. Service at each agency could only be publically accessed during business hours. As of August 1, 2014, people facing homeless crisis situations will be able to call 519.354.6628 for after-hours service Monday through Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 8 a.m., and 24 hours/day on weekends and holidays.

Callers will be screened, diverted to safe alternative housing or referred to local emergency accommodations. All callers will be referred to local community supports and services for help in finding stable long-term housing using a “Housing First” framework.

“Homelessness is an issue in Chatham-Kent and stable housing is vital to the overall health and well-being of individuals and families,” said Valerie Colasanti, Director of Employment & Social Services and Co-Chair of the Chatham-Kent Housing & Homelessness Committee. “The Homeless Response Line will provide a coordinated and centralized after-hours contact for people experiencing emergency homelessness and will connect them with the supports needed to find and secure stable housing.”
