michigan boat crash

Two people are dead and three others injured after two water crafts collided in the South Channel off of Harsens Island in Michigan early yesterday evening.

The location of the crash is directly across the border from Walpole Island.

According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, a cabin cruiser was struck by a 25 foot Baja about 6:45 p.m. The Baja ended up riding up and over the other boat, causing one occupant of the cabin cruiser to be thrown into the water.

A 57 year old man from Chesterfield and a 68 year old Canadian woman, passengers on the cabin cruiser, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other passengers on the cabin cruiser were transported to hospitals.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Ontario [provincial Police (OPP), Clay Township Fire Rescue, Macomb Sheriff’s Marine Division and Tri-Hospital EMS.

The accident is still under investigation and alcohol does appear to be a factor in the crash.
