Vandals struck Wallaceburg last night in two separate incidents.

Arthur Cowling, of Elizabeth Street in Wallaceburg, said he heard a group of people outside his house last night, but didn’t think much of it.

“I heard them all talking and laughing,” he said. “I’ll often hear people going by talking and laughing. I didn’t pay any attention. This is the first time I’ve had this much damage done.”

Cowling’s garden had several trellis’ knocked over and smashed.

“Other times I’ve had a trellis pushed over, but that time there were a bunch of kids… they were fooling around and they knocked them over,” he said. “This time they did so much damage. I spend a lot of money in the garden, buying roses once they die off. Re-planting them. Some years they cost $20, this year they cost $24 apiece. I put hundreds of dollars into this garden.”

In a separate incident, graffiti was tagged on the side of the Wallaceburg Eye Care Centre on Wellington Street in Wallaceburg.

The phrase “Idle No More” was spray painted in large graffiti style lettering, with the phrase “First Nations First” painted on beside it.

According to Wikipedia, Idle No More is a protest movement; which began in December 2012, originating among the Aboriginal peoples in Canada comprising the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and their non-Aboriginal supporters in Canada, and to a lesser extent, internationally.

  1. The sad true here is the people spray painting probably don’t even know what Idle No More stands for. That’s a really good way to get others on your side; stupid.
