The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man following a report of suspicious person in Chatham.

Last night around 9:30 p.m. officers responded to the Harvey Street area as a man was observed trying to break into vehicles.

Upon arrival, the intoxicated man was observed crouched down next to a car with a bag full of tools attempting to pry the door open.

As the man was placed under arrest, police say he violently pulled away from the officer and turned in an aggressive stance with his fists clenched.

“The man refused to comply with the officers’ demands and continued to resist arrest by swinging and kicking,” police officials said.

“As a result, police deployed a conducted energy weapon (taser) and the man was safely taken into custody.”

Upon being searched after the arrest, the man was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

The 33-year-old Chatham man has been charged with being intoxicated in a public place, resist arrest and drug possession.

He remains in police custody and will be released when sober.
