ATV and snowmobile crash on Lake St. Clair

The Essex OPP are still investigating after an ATV and snowmobile crash on Lake St. Clair.

Police say on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at approximately 11:00pm three snow machines were traveling westbound and two ATV’s were traveling eastbound on Lake St Clair approximately 400 meters west of Surf Club drive and 100 meters offshore.

As the vehicles approached each other, all but 2 vehicles passed safely, with the two involved vehicles striking each other head on.

The driver of the snow machine, a 28 years old Lakeshore man was seriously injured, and transported to area hospital.

The driver of the ATV, a 21 years Lakeshore old man was not injured and was arrested at the scene and will be charged with Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

There was a passenger on the ATV, a 21 years old Lakeshore man who also was not injured.

OPP Technical Traffic Investigator attended the scene and conducted an analysis of the scene and collected appropriate evidence.

OPP Emergency Response Team were also utilized with OPP ATV’s to assist at the scene.

Investigation is continuing.

The Essex County OPP would like to educate the public on the importance of winter recreational sports involving motor vehicles.

A snow machine and ATV are considered a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code and carries the same charges and penalties for similar offences, which includes impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Before heading out on our trails and lakes, citizens should check the weather and ice conditions, ensure everyone is properly dressed and they possess all important safety gear.

Drivers should advise a friend or family member of their destination and future return time.
