The water on Walpole Island is safe to drink, despite some spiked chlorine levels on the First Nation reserve.
Public Works officials on Walpole issued a notice to residents today, stating that at no time was the potable water supply contaminated from any spill, from any source.
“The potable water supply, due to new chlorine pumps installation, experienced hire chlorine flows,” Walpole Island Public Works officials said.
“This was contained in our water reservoir at the Water Treatment Plant, but due to the system being shut down for two days we had to start to fill the Water Tower. At that time there was a higher than normal chlorine residual that entered the distribution system.”
Presently the water is safe to use and still okay to drink.
“Although some people might have a lower tolerance for the chlorine, the water is safe for drinking, bathing and cleaning,” Public Works officials said.
The core area between the Water Treatment Plant and the Water Tower was the most likely areas to be affected by the higher chlorine level, officials said.
“The chlorine levels at the Water Treatment Plant are back to normal and the Water Treatment Plant is flushing some of the dead ends to help dilute the possible higher level of chlorine in our potable water supply in the distribution system.”
Walpole Island Public Works officials thanked the residents for their patience and apologized for the inconvenience.
