Wallaceburg Rotary sponsors local youth

Raymond Yang, a grade 10 student at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, spoke at the Rotary Club of Wallaceburg on Thursday, February 26, 2015.

The Rotary Club is sponsoring Raymond for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference to be held in Michigan this spring. We believe Raymond is an excellent candidate who is already working to help others, and he would really benefit from this program.

RYLA is an annual conference for eligible students throughout our District, and our goal is to encourage and help develop leadership skills in young people.

To qualify, students must be strongly interested in and actively involved in a variety of programs and events to make things better within their school and/or within the community.

Students we have sponsored in previous years reported that they found the conference really helps them develop their skills and self-confidence, and helps them become better citizens.

Raymond is committed to helping others and is involved in many events and activities at the high school.

He told us about one game involving students in the entire school board district.

He is interested in programs to improve the environment at the school, and especially to improve the mental health.

He is involved in programs to raise awareness of mental health and help students become more active and healthy.

Raymond is involved with tutorial programs after regular school hours, and is helping to develop programs in collaboration with the school board.

Ray is also in a youth committee to help young people meet their challenges, and in a volunteering program to help out in the community as part of their required community service hours. He also spoke about their fundraising efforts and they have almost reached their goal.
