Update: Blaze destroys St. Clair Township home

A blaze on Saturday night completely destroyed a home in St. Clair Township.

Walt Anderson, the fire chief for the St. Clair Township Fire Department, told the Sydenham Current the family of the Kimball Road residence had just arrived back from vacation an hour before the fire ignited.

“There pipes were frozen and they began thawing them out,” Anderson said. “They left the room, came back, and the room was on fire.”

Anderson said by the time crews arrived the fire had spread throughout the whole structure.

The damage is estimated at $300,000.

“They lost the house, the contents and a couple of cars,” Anderson said.

There were no injuries as a result of the blaze.

Anderson said the bulk of the firefighters battled the blaze until 3 a.m. on Sunday, while a small crew remained on the scene afterwards to ensure it didn’t flare back up.

A section of Kimball Road was closed for a few hours, between Courtright Line and Moore Line, while firefighters battled the blaze.
