A group of Wallaceburg volunteers were recognized by council on Monday for their work surrounding the Sydenham District Pool.
The Wallaceburg Community Engagement Group were presented with certificates from the Municipality at their regular meeting on Monday.
“This group came and banded together when the Sydenham Pool in our community was in jeopardy,” said Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor. “They have not only increased the usage and the commitment to the pool, they remain strong, meet on a regular basis and continue to push forward to bring new and positive ideas for usage of our pool in our community.”
Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley added: “Anyone in Wallaceburg that uses the pool can thank this group. When it really mattered most, this is the group that really got down to work, dug their heels in in a positive way and worked with staff to find solutions and ensure the long-time survival of our indoor pool in Wallaceburg.”
Wesley said the people who helped with the pool initiative, often help with other community projects.
“A lot of these names are involved with the hospital fundraising, a family doctor, a representative from the Kinsmen Club, people involved with the local environmental group WATCH. They are people that not only assisted with the pool endeavour, but they are key contributors and key people in the community as a whole.”
The Sydenham District Pool has been listed on the potential chopping block a couple of years ago, before the community rallied in support of keeping the indoor facility operational in Wallaceburg.
